Bagpipe Lessons in Schools

I offer specialist bagpipe tuition in primary schools, secondary schools, academies and colleges throughout Peterborough and Cambridgeshire.

Schools can book:

  • One-to-one tuition
  • Small group lessons
  • Whole-class demonstrations
  • Music enrichment sessions
  • Scottish culture and music workshops

Lessons can take place during the school day, helping pupils experience a unique traditional instrument while developing valuable musical skills.

Learning on the Practice Chanter

Every beginner starts on a practice chanter.

The practice chanter is quieter, easier to play and far more suitable for learning than starting on full bagpipes. Most students spend around six months building technique before moving onto the pipes, although everyone progresses at their own pace.

I'll help you choose a quality practice chanter and reed, and every student receives a tutor book to guide their practice between lessons.

How Are the Bagpipes Different?

Unlike many instruments, the Highland bagpipes produce a continuous stream of sound.

Instead of separating notes with your tongue, pipers keep a constant flow of air while creating clear notes using precise finger movements. That's why learning grace notes and embellishments is so important—they separate the notes cleanly while keeping the music flowing.

This unique technique is what gives the Highland bagpipes their distinctive sound, and it's something we'll build step by step from your very first lesson.
