Bagpipes & Ceilidh - An Interactive Workshop
This lively, hands-on workshop brings the excitement of the Highland bagpipes to children, families, and community groups in a way that is fun, accessible, and truely memorable.
The session begins with a short live bagpipe performance, allowing everyone to hear the full power and character of the instrument up close. From there, participants are gradually invited into the world of the bagpipes through clear, engaging explanation and active involvement.
Using the practice chanter and electric chanter, we explore:
-
The 9 main notes of the bagpipes
-
The 3 essential grace notes that give pipe music its distinctive style and rhythm
-
How tunes are built and how the bagpipes actually work
Participants are then introduced to the full set of Highland bagpipes, with the opportunity to try playing them themselves, supported and encouraged throughout — no musical experience required.
The workshop finishes with fun, inclusive ceilidh dancing, turning the music into movement and filling the room with energy, laughter, and shared enjoyment. Dances are adapted to suit all ages and abilities, making sure everyone can take part.
By the end of the session, participants don’t just hear the bagpipes — they understand and appreciate them. They leave with confidence, excitement, and a memorable experience they want to talk about and share with others. The bagpipes become something accessible and impressive, creating a genuine sense of connection, curiosity, and joy that lasts well beyond the workshop.
