Meet Kathryn Johnstone - The Magic Behind the Music

Kathryn Johnstone is a dynamic and creative folk musician based in Peterborough, performing widely across Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire, and beyond. With over 15 years of experience, she brings powerful, heartfelt energy to every event – whether through the rhythmic charm of the diatonic accordion or the commanding sound of the Great Highland bagpipes.

Kathryn’s love of the melodeon began when she was handed one by Pig Dyke Molly, the iconic black-and-white molly dancing side. Though she’d played piano accordion before (not very well, she admits!), the melodeon (or diatonic accordion as it's often called) was something different. Within a month, she’d mastered the entire Pig Dyke repertoire and became their dedicated musician for over a decade. - and has been playing melodeon ever since.

Also known as The Fenland Piper, Kathryn has made a name for herself both locally and nationally, with appearances on BBC News and Radio showcasing her vibrant and unmistakable style on the highland bagpipes. From solo performances to full ceilidh bands, her music is rooted in tradition and driven by a spirit of creativity.

Offstage, Kathryn offers private bagpipe lessons, helping new players find their rhythm and confidence. Her commitment to community, music education, and meaningful connection is at the heart of everything she does.

Whether you’re planning a wedding, corporate event, party, or themed celebration, Kathryn works closely with each client to tailor the performance – from favourite tunes to special requests – making every moment unforgettable.
